History
Saanich people were previously nomadic and camped at various places on the Saanich Peninsula
and the Gulf Islands in order to benefit from the various habitat and wildlife at these different
locations. The proof lies in the burial sites and artifacts that are found when new development is
in progress. Our people were also known for their social activities with other tribes, often
visiting Bands on the mainland for cultural and social purposes.

Years ago when archaeologists came across our ancestors remains and belongings they would
take them to study and place them into museums. With the help of an interested community
member Cora Jacks who has done years of volunteer research (now on staff with Tseycum) we
are able to engage in the repatriation process.

Recently Cora and members of Chief and Council were in Chicago, Seattle, and New York
searching and studying where our ancestoral remains have been taken and looking for ways to
repatriate.
